Following
the latest uproar about radio talkback host Mr John
Laws, I felt the whole Media circus was worth a
comment. This incident where Mr Laws has allegedly
accepted money and quite a lot of it to er...
change his opinion about the banking industry
raises some important lessons for us all.
It is interesting to note how Mr Laws reacted when
the "shoe was on the other foot" after the ABC's
Media Watch program revealed details of alleged
payoffs from the Bankers' Association. I guess now
he knows what it is like to be attacked for dodgy
deals; real or imaginary. Whether you believe John
Laws is above reproach or as crooked as a dog's
hind leg is irrelevant. Personally I think he is
just an opinionated person like myself and deserves
no more adoration or persecution than anyone
else.
The fact that he is a media personality does not
make him immune to the Law, nor does it make him a
qualitfied person to be believed without
question.
Whatever your opinions, be warned! Media
personalities are just that, personalities. They
are not employed because their wisdom outstrips the
Dalai Lama. They are employed like the rest of us.
Listen to them, talk to them, but do your homework
and make up your own mind.
Form your own opinions, but make them INFORMED
opinions. Don't base your opinions on racism,
rumour, fear, hatred or heresay. Base your opinions
on careful contemplation. Try to see both sides of
any situation and then decide. Never let other
people do your thinking. Their motivations may not
be quite as innocent as they would like you to
believe. In this day and age who is untouchable?
Who in this day and age cannot be bought by the
mighty dollar? What media organisation is not
driven by the quest for ratings, and what media
organisation will not go to ANY lengths in the
pursuit of the ratings?
Media organisations will prey on you, they'll put
your life in danger, destroy your relationships,
buy your friends and possibly even contribute to
your death in the name of the "Public's Right to
Know". Don't support this kind of behaviour. It is
not cool, it is detestable. Switch off. Don't be
swayed by the opinions of others just because you
happen to go along with some of their ideas. Think
for yourself, be responsible for yourself.
Ultimately YOU are responsible because the media
tell you what they think you want to know.
Kidzje!
Finale:
If
you want to research this topic further, I suggest
you go buy some copies of FRONTLINE from the ABC.
Contrary to popular belief, there is more to life
than hamburgers, you CAN be happy without money,
just look at me, I'm poor, but quite content in
myself, because I know I will never be rich.
Happiness is wanting what you've got.
